Thursday Inspiration: Is Self-Help Making Us Selfish?
In a world that glorifies personal growth, therapy, and "me time," a question lingers in the shadows:
Have we become too obsessed with ourselves in the name of healing?
The self-help industry is booming, mental wellness conversations are front and center (which we love!), and people are learning to set boundaries like never before. But here’s the twist—when does self-care stop being healing and start being isolating? When do boundaries become emotional walls? When does "putting yourself first" turn into a subtle neglect of those around you?
The Rise of “Me Culture”
Search “how to be happy” and you’ll get millions of results telling you to:
Cut off toxic people
Prioritize yourself at all costs
Say “no” more often
Chase your dreams unapologetically
💚 All beautiful and powerful—when balanced. But in today’s digital age, we risk swinging the pendulum too far. We’re talking about “toxic self-prioritization.” It’s the idea that if something doesn’t serve you, it doesn’t belong in your life.
But here’s the thing: healing isn’t just about you.
It’s also about the people you touch, the relationships you nurture, and the legacy of emotional safety you leave behind.
Are We Healing, or Just Avoiding Discomfort?
True growth involves connection, not just protection. Avoiding discomfort under the guise of "protecting your peace" can quietly become avoidance of growth. Vulnerability? Conflict resolution? Holding space for someone else’s emotions? That’s healing too.
💚 Therapy teaches us self-awareness, not selfishness.
💚 Boundaries are meant to protect, not isolate.
💚 And healing should make you more available to life, not less.
